|
 |
We have compiled a list of questions either asked by customers or that we think may be useful.
Please use this page to find answers to common questions. The answers here can save you time and the
cost of a call!
Q. What is adware?
A. Adware is a program that directs advertisements to your machine. It is
normally
installed along with a piece of free software, often without the user's explicit permission.
Commonly it manifests itself in the form of various pop-up advertisements. It is a mechanism by
which producers of the free software can make money!
Q. What is spyware?
A. A piece of software installed on your machine that transfers information
to a
site on the internet where it can be used to record marketing information and other computer
details. Legal spyware reputedly does not record your personal information, and may be installed
when software such as Kazaa is downloaded. Other, disreputable, spyware may transmit personal
details such as credit card/bank account details etc. Spyware can infect a machine by simply
being connected to the internet.
Q. How do I get adware/spyware?
A. You can get them from :
- downloading peer to peer software on the net
- installed automatically by visiting misbehaved web sites
- following links in misleading email
- following links in misleading websites
- downloading certain free, sometimes disreputable, software from the web
Q. What is a virus?
A. A program transmitted to a computer with the intention of performing a
malicious action. Viruses are usually designed to replicate themselves and spread to as many other
machines as possible. They can take a number of different forms known as worms, trojans etc. They
can be contracted via the internet by visiting less than reputable websites or using peer to peer
software. They can also be transmitted via infected removable media.
Q. How can I keep my system protected from viruses?
A. You can use an anti-virus product such as Panda Antivirus, Bullguard,
Norton Antivirus etc. which we strongly recommend. These need to be installed and then updated on a
regular basis. Free virus checkers are available however, we recommend purchasing one because you
get what you pay for. Note: A virus checker will not protect you from adware or spyware.
Q. I just got my computer back, turned it on and I saw a message "new hardware has been
detected - Plug & play monitor". What do I do?
A. This message may be seen because a monitor from our workshop was used to
test your machine. Simply accept the dialogues as presented. Often driver re-installation is not
required.
Q. Why does my USB device not work? I plugged it in. It says it's searching for drivers but
cannot find any.
A. Read the manual and insert the manufacturer's driver installation disk
to locate the required driver. It is usually better to install drivers before connecting your USB
hardware. However, sometimes the manual requires the hardware to be plugged in first.
